If you care about analyzing data astutely, a faithful examination of application and admit/ding patterns reveals obvious clues about how much or little one should adapt an application to a particular target school. And the answer is “very little.” Our approach is to (1) establish your strongest pitch, and then (2) apply to a smart range of programs. A talented consultant need not share the alma mater of your target school to achieve this. This is an unfortunate myth that has intuitive appeal to some clients. We feel this approach is misguided since it over-assumes schools are looking for different styles and strengths within an applicant. The data (and keen observation) demonstrates this not to be true.
