Business School Profile:
Toronto Rotman

The Joseph L. Rotman School of Management is the business school at the University of Toronto. Established in 1950, Rotman offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs in business administration, finance and commerce.

For its full-time MBA program, Rotman’s value proposition is built upon 1) an innovative curriculum; 2) tailored career services; and 3) Self Development Laboratory. Let’s look at these a little bit closer.

Through experiential learning and integrative thinking students discover how to view the big picture to solve problems creatively. Business design is a signature aspect of the Rotman MBA. Specifically, this is problem-solving and “designer” thinking at its finest to create business value. In fact, the Business Design truly distinguishes the MBA offerings at this Canadian b-school, taking learning from the classroom to the real world.

Career services are available to MBA students even before classes begin with access to the Career Centre. Coaching sessions, flexible internship programs, and mentorships within the Toronto business community uniquely prepare Rotman graduates for post-MBA careers.

Citing the need for a “developmental boost” in MBA programs, perhaps the most distinguishing aspect of a Rotman MBA is access to the Self-Development Laboratory, or SDL. In groups of four working with a single professor, students actively develop problem-solving, communication and conflict-resolution skills in ways that precisely match their core program work. How? The SDL prepares students with communication skills and interpersonal confidence and the technical abilities needed to succeed in business “by targeting intensive feedback-based interventions delivered by professional instructors to communicative activities that are required of students as part of the core areas of technical and analytical training.” Pretty cool, eh?

Attracting a very diverse range of students – professionally, academically and culturally – Toronto Rotman considers its student body to be a key strength of the program. Intellectual curiosity is a primary attribute of the ideal Rotman student. In fact, the program has been characterized as among the most innovative players in management education anywhere on the globe. With a huge array of student club offerings, anchored by the Graduate Business Council, there are boundless opportunities for networking and real-world leadership opportunities. And with over 15,000 members worldwide, the Rotman alumni network is one that graduates draw upon and contribute to for life.

Toronto itself is a huge draw for Rotman MBA students, many of whom remain in the city after graduation. As the second-largest financial and third-largest tech hub in North America, with robust film, TV and health sciences industries, Toronto is rightly characterized as being “at the centre of the action”, it’s a cultural melting pot and neighborhood-driven city – inspiring at every corner while remaining culturally connected. From the dazzling CN Tower to the beautiful lakefront quays to world-class theatre and arts, sports, dining and business, Toronto is a special place.
