Business School Profile:
UNC Kenan-Flagler
In the 18th century, when UNC was founded, it was the first state university in the nation. In the 20th century, UNC created one of the nation’s first schools of business, Kenan-Flagler. Today, this tradition of leadership continues with the Leadership Initiative, excellent faculty, and dyed-in-the-wool integrity. Case in point: unique to this MBA is the Ethics Course required by all students. Beyond the leadership core of the Kenan-Flagler way is hands-on experience that includes global immersion electives and internships and a focus on “sustainable strategy” that teaches students to seek results that serve the triple bottom line: achieving profits while doing the right thing for people and the planet.
With an emphasis on pedagogical variety that includes case-study and small group activities, the UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA is valued by our clients for its flexibility and global perspective. Classes are designed with support from corporate advisory boards and challenge students in three areas that recruiters say are essential for career success: 1) Asking the right questions and thinking like a general manager; 2) working effectively as a leader and member of teams; and 3) speaking to groups and presenting ideas persuasively.
Every year, 20% of Kenan-Flagler electives offered are new – a practice that guarantees that emerging topics in business and faculty research are quickly reflected in the curriculum. And there’s no delay in exploring these as students are able to begin taking electives as early as in “Module III” of the first year.
The Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, established over 25 years ago, remains at the forefront of business education. Founded to promote private enterprise worldwide, the institute is unique in that it is part of a top-ranked business school and research university, providing access to intellectual resources that enrich its projects and the research that informs them. “Aerotropolis: The Way We’ll Live Next,” written by professor Jack Kasarda was in the top 10 “Ideas That Will Change the World.”
An active blog reflects the innovative and engaged spirit at Kenan-Flagler – from faculty and students alike. From its Chapel Hill home – situated in the Research Triangle, the nation’s largest planned research park anchored by Chapel Hill, Durhan and Raleigh – Kenan-Flagler students have access to a varied cultural life. Themed evening social events, planned by the MBA Program office and the MBA student body, are often held on Latane Plaza outside the business school. You, faculty and alumni will enjoy First Football Tailgate with the Beer Club and the MBA Follies. And if that’s not your cup of tea, there are literally dozens of other student activities to pursue. The real challenge will be choosing what to do!
