What is the Goals Worksheet, and why is it important?

The Goals Worksheet is a proprietary planning tool designed to force clarity around a candidate’s post-graduate direction with the discipline of a business plan. Completed early in the engagement, it serves as the strategic anchor for the entire application process.

The worksheet is built around five core questions: What is your long-term goal? Why do you need this degree? Why now? Why should this institution admit you over similarly qualified candidates? And why this particular school? Each requires precision rather than aspiration. Long-term goals must be articulated across multiple defined dimensions—such as sector, target market, and the logical connection between past experience and future direction—within strict word limits. The “Why you?” component further requires candidates to distill their professional, personal, and academic contributions into sharply constrained statements.

This rigor is intentional. Admissions committees are assessing not only ambition, but whether a candidate has developed a credible, internally consistent rationale for pursuing the degree at this moment and at this institution. Vague or generic responses are among the most common—and most damaging—failures in competitive applications. The Goals Worksheet eliminates that weakness by compelling focused, unsentimental self-analysis. The result is stronger positioning on paper and, just as importantly, clearer strategic conviction for the candidate.
